A PV module is a sheet of glass with a forty year warranty attached to it, shipped by the container and installed months later. Almost everything that goes wrong with solar logistics happens between those two moments, in storage and in handling, and it usually shows up as microcracks that nobody sees until the string underperforms.
Modules are stacked on edge in their crates for a reason. Restacking them flat, dropping a pallet an inch too hard or letting a stack lean is enough to crack cells inside a laminate that still looks perfect. The handling rule matters more than the racking.
A project buys in full container quantities against a grid connection date, then draws them down in small deliveries as roofs or rows are completed. That is months of storage on goods bought in one go, and a delivery pattern that changes weekly.
A pallet of modules is dense, so floor loading and stack height decide the layout more than pallet count does. Block storage usually beats racking, provided the aisles let you reach the right pallet without moving five others.
We hold modules in Zeebrugge, Liège and Hull and run the drops on our own fleet of more than 120 tractors and 220 trailers. Imported modules can sit under customs warehousing until they are sold on, which matters on a container bought ahead of a project.
